Hair Drug Testing Explained Part 2

In Part 2 we cover Testing For Drugs in Hair, Reading The Results of a Hair Drug Test and We Support All of Our Hair Drug Test Results. See Part 1 for Introduction To Hair Testing and Collection of The Hair Specimen.

TESTING FOR DRUGS IN HAIR.

Small amounts of drugs get deposited in the hair cortex as the hair follicle is fed by the bloodstream. It takes about 7-10 days for the hair to grow above the scalp before it can be detected in a hair follicle drug analysis. People try to pass a hair drug test by using shampoos or other methods. These usually have no effect on the hair for the following reason. All hair drug test samples are run through a chemical wash prior to screening and confirmation analysis to remove external contamination. Hair specimens are first screened using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technology. Any hair drug test that is a presumptive positive in the ELISA screening is subjected to GC/MS, GC/MS/MC, confirmation testing. Tandem "MS" as it is known, provides the most sensitive "molecular fingerprint" of the drug under question. Some people have asked us if the color of hair will make it more susceptible to retain drugs and the answer is no per the Federal Register - "Studies published in peer-reviewed literature do not indicate any significant impact based on hair color or race, and this has been acknowledged by the U.S. Government in the Notice of Proposed Regulatory Modification (NPRM) published in the Federal Register (69 FR 19675) in 2005." Drugs tested for include the following: Cocaine, Marijuana, Phencyclidine (PCP), Opiates (codeine, morphine, heroin), Amphetamines (Methamphetamine, MDA or Ecstasy - MDMA). The extended opiates include: Hydrocodone Oxycodone ( Percocet/Percodan ), ( Vicodin, Loratab/Lorect ) Hydromorphone ( Dilaudid ). HOW TO READ THE RESULTS OF THE HAIR DRUG TEST?

The turnaround time for a hair drug test can be as short as 24 hours if everything in the screening test is negative, but usually results are reported in 24- 72 hours. All hair follicle drug tests come with a one page report. Hair drug testing levels are expressed in picograms per milligram. A picogram is one-trillionth of a gram, a very small amount. A hair drug test result is derived from the completion of a "Screening Test" and in some cases, a second test called a "Confirmation Test". If a screening test result is below the screening cutoff concentration, then the sample is reported as NEGATIVE. A screening test result above the screening cutoff concentration suggests that the hair specimen MAY contain drugs. If it appears that the hair specimen MAY contain drugs a Confirmation Test is then performed using a new portion of the original sample. The confirmation test will only verify the presence of the drugs listed above. If the result of the confirmation test is below the confirmation cutoff concentration, then the sample is reported as NEGATIVE. When the result of the confirmation test is greater than the confirmation cutoff concentration, the sample is reported as POSITIVE. Results are usually mailed or sent by fax. We can email results if there is no name or social security number (anonymous hair test) on the chain of custody.

WE SUPPORT ALL OF OUR HAIR TEST RESULTS.

All hair drug tests regardless whether it is an anonymous test or otherwise come with a one page report with any positive levels reported as an actual number, the higher the number the more the substance used, except of marijuana. If anything is positive we include a dose-response chart which gives an approximation of low, medium, or high use. This document alone has high value. Concerning the use of hair drug testing in litigation, the hair test is being used in court cases on a daily basis. Expomed Inc. has participated in court cases regarding the James Trimble triple murder case, the Homeland Security trial of Coast Guard Captain Michael Sullivan and many family law issues such as divorce and child custody. We have experts available for testimony whether it is in person, video conferencing or by phone. Also available is a hair drug testing litigation package. The litigation package consists of all documents, such as internal chain of custody and supporting documentation, which are generated when the lab receives the sample to the time the results are reported. Any extra hair is retained with the chain of custody for one year. Hair drug test results are retained for 2 years or as mandated by law.
